Mission Statement: The Conservation Department is a division of the Methuen Department of Economic and Community Development with the Commission which consists of seven volunteer members serving as commissioners, two volunteer members serving as alternate commissioners and a paid staff consisting of the Conservation Officer and a head clerk.
The commission has the responsibility of protecting the interests of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, MGL Chapter 131, s40 and the Methuen Wetlands Protection Ordinance, Chapter 12, M.C.M. The Commission reviews filings in which any person wishes to perform work within a Wetland Resource Area and/or within one hundred feet of a Resource Area.
These interests are: the protection of public and private water supply, flood control, wildlife habitat, storm damage prevention, prevention of pollution, land containing shellfish and fisheries. The local ordinance also protects the interests of recreation, water recharge areas, wildlife, erosion control, floodplains and aesthetics.
